Lee Valley and Veritas have teamed up to create a cane and staff tip set.

Lee Valley and Veritas have teamed up to create a cane and staff tip set that allows you to switch between a heavy-duty rubber tip and a sharp metal tip.

The set includes a tapered brass end cap designed to fit 1"-diameter or larger shafts. Shape your staff or cane shaft to fit into the end cap and then drive a screw through the cap into the center of the shaft to lock the cap in place. After the end cap is secure, add a smaller threaded cap to the bottom of the end cap. The tapered metal tip and rubber tip both screw into the threaded cap. The rubber tip is designed for everyday use. The stainless-steel tip is designed to give you additional grip when wading through a stream, climbing a mountain, or walking on icy sidewalks.

The kit, which includes the brass end cap, the threaded cap, and both tips, is available for $17.50 + $8 shipping and handling from Lee Valley, 800-871-8158, www.leevalley.com.

Hello wood world. I'm looking to get into carving custom canes/walking sticks. I can't seem to find any good sources for the actual blanks. I'm looking for exotic woods and top grade stuff. Anybody have any good contacts?

Here in Edmonton Alberta I buy most of my exotic wood from W.G.Chanin Hardwoods Ltd. Gary Chanin has the best selection of hardwoods I have ever seen. Pretty much anything you want something like a 150 different speices. He's not cheap but the quality and selection is second to none IMO. If you want ebony he has black and white ebony, Gaboon ebony, Mun ebony, Macassar ebony. Several types of rosewood and then there is kingwood, and tulipwood (not the tulip poplar but tulipwood pink and cream colored). Real Honduras mahogany And the list goes on. Anyway the selection is really fantastic. Here's the addy and ph.no. 14615-116 Ave NW Phone (780) 447-4888 Edmonton Alberta Fax (780) 447-1823 T5M 3E8 Email: wgchaninhdwoods@interbaun.com Sorry no website that I know of but I hope this helps. Dan
