Nice. I took an intro spindle turning course at the North Bennet Street school in Boston, and the two projects we did over 4-5 days were an awl (our own design) and a mallet (design almost identical to that).
Well, actually, mine's a bit different - it's got a bunch of flat spots where I've used it to seat a spur drive in work!

I will have to keep my eye out for baseball bats at garage sales. I need a good mallet, just hate dropping $40 on one.
