The dead wood branch was carved from Basswood while the air roots for the orchid were Tupelo pieces that were cut and rounded, then soaked in water for a few hours. I shaped old coat-hanger wire to the shape I wanted for each root and then bent the water softened Tupelo to the wire...used tape and twist ties to keep them together until dry...next day. Removed the wire...Tupelo held exact shape...apply several coats of sealer after totally dry and paint. The roots are glued into base by a few hidden pins...this detail was to be important later since many people handled this carving ....no damage to roots, yet!
