I toiled with how to attach it for a while, but after i completed it and put it together, it is so heavy that it stays together quite well after sliding the bench into the slots. If you happen to find a good way to do this please let me know.

i have made a couple in the same design, and the last i have left some wood at the front of the slot this hides the plank in the slot. I havent' but you could then drill and dowel it to keep it togeather.
