Carved by Bob Eck Plantation, FL 2008
Size: to 24”. Habitat: reef tops, grass beds.
Food: mostly sea urchins, clams, and crabs.
Range: Tropical Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico.
Ruler of the Reef, the beautiful Queen Triggerfish
is also one of the most aggressive fish in the ocean.
Urchins don’t stand a chance. With a well aimed and
powerful puff of water, sea urchins are toppled over
to expose their unprotected belly.
Then the Queen’s stout jaw muscles and strong sharp
teeth (which are angled slightly forward), turn the
urchin into tropical seas ‘fast food‘.
Triggerfish have an unusual first dorsal spine which is
locked into position by the second spine, but can be
lowered by depressing the shorter third spine ---- or
trigger.
