Dr. Steven Brandt of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, chip carved both sides of this fireplace screen with blocks of basswood and used butternut for the frame and latticework.

The frame for the screen was built by a friend, Mike Frakes, who also assisted with the assembly. The screen with 32 panels on each side received a second place Best of Show award at an Oklahoma City Woodcarvers Club Show judged by Janet Denton Cordell.

The idea for the design came from an antique of Dr. Brandt’s grandmother, that had a double-sided tapestry with scenes of plowing and harvest--seasons when a fire was not needed.
