A client gave George Chau of Forest Hills, New York, this box, which measures 17" x 11 1/2" x 3 1/2". He decided to carve something related to what he saw in the news.
Although the original story of Pandora's Box was from ancient Greek mythology, one can still relate it to today's experiences. Once Pandora opened her box, she released all human miseries--war, plagues, pestilence, famine, etc.
The lid was only 1/4" thick, so George could only do low-relief carving, very carefully. Occasionally he had to check the underside of the lid, to make sure he was not carving straight through. When the box is opened, you can see the word "Hope" painted on the underside of the lid.
