Most carvers who start with smaller pieces and, at some point, think of tackling bigger projects.
After carving a few birds, Marc Belliveau wanted to try something bigger. So when he saw a chainsaw advertised for $30 in his local newspaper, he bought it. $70 in parts and labor later, Marc found himself carving this soldier from Louisbourg, a French fortress that was in existence in his hometown of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada, in the mid-1700s. Using the chainsaw, a grinder, chisels, sanders, and a flexible shaft power carver, he worked on the piece for several hundred hours. He was worried about checking in the carving’s face, but only ran into problems with a knot near the carving’s nose.
