I’d hate to meet this bug alone in a dark alley! Howard Clements of Knox, PA, sent us this photo of a praying mantis he carved out of catalpa wood. The mantis is approximately 21" in length—almost nine times the size of a typical praying mantis. Howard points out that the grain of the wood flows with the legs and there is no cross grain. He said he carved the eyes, painted them and coated them with epoxy. The carved leaf base is made out of poplar.
