In a past issue, Editor-at-Large Roger Schroeder asked “Why Pine.” A.K. Ireland of Venice, FL, sent us this photo to tell us why. A. K., who tells us he’s over 80 years old, said he’s been carving for only two years. This eagle was carved from two 1/2"-thick pieces of pine laminated together. It was 8" wide and 35" long. Some of his other work was carved from 2" by 4" studs glued together. One of his eagles was 36" long and A.K. said if it was carved out of butternut the wood alone would have cost more than $100. The 2"x4" boards he glued together cost about $6.
