When I busted the old apple stump,I had 2 larger chunks, one I carved the troll in and the Indian in the other bigger chunk of apple. There was 3 smaller slabs that I carved this druid in and today I will be carving the 2 remaining ones. I will post them when Ive finished them. I like to utilize getting the most from any wood or from any type of project Im working with. Better known as being cheap!! Hahaaa~ This Druid is 1/4 inches thick. Yea I thought I would paint something different than the old gray headed man that most times I have in the past is where the different colors in this olde Druid came about. Im glad you enjoyed seeing him! Thks Gene

It appears like you did some work with a burning tool, however, I know wood can take on that appearance...anyway it worked for you. I am yet to purchase any wood. Like yourself, the material always seems to be available so why go out and buy any. Having said that, I would like to try a nice block of dry basswood (expensive in my parts) and try a full bust in the round. I typically do deep relief and work with logs. Your Druid turned out well. Nicely done.

No,Patrick I dont have or use a wood burner. This Druid is deep carved then stained which darken any cuts I made in him plus when I painted him,I made the deeper cuts even darker. I just finished 2 Elks fighting in one of the apple slabs and its painted. I had to be really carefull,I kelp hitting rotten spots in the Elks and around them. I wont be able to post any pictures till Sunday, with my wife out of town with her work, she took our good little dig/camera! I have some pick up wood I find from time to time but would like to buy some new wood sometimes also. I've seen your carvings in logs, love how you get out the noses & the eyes you carved are really GREAT!! The Johnny Rebs were SOooooooo NEAT!! too.
