Hi cabstract....
I use hardwoods and softwoods....
Hardwood is harder to carve,but WAY more forgiving with a knife slip as opposed to softwood

I never really keep track of amount of time I put in...could get depressing

That said,I did keep track one time....out of curiosity
25 hours of just whittling time (no merit for layout) to do my ball in ball in ball out of birch.
One hour a day for 25 straight day
That was the last time I kept track
