The big gaps I've filled with small bits of wood , the small simply with wood filler. U can still see most of them when U look closely but I meant them to be seen.

Idgiee, I absolutely love your idea of using scrape wood the way you have. For years I have collected scrape wood from the builders around here and have used it to carve my boots and shoes. But as you can guess I have tons more that I couldn't figure out what to do with. My only question is: Do you sand the individual pieces flat before gluing? The reason I ask is because all of the 2x4's and 2x6's I have, have the factory semi-rounded edges on them.

No. I don't sand pieces flat. With the horse I've glued the raff once into the middle, nice once outside. Now I am planning to do similar technique glued child face, already got wood ,softer and better quality and I am planning to sand each piece.
