Location Blowing Rock, NC
Interests Woodcarving, surf and fly fishing, classic cars and antique tractors.
Occupation Retired
About Me I retired about 2 years ago as manufacturing and facilities maintenance manager.
I have always had a "wanta try" interest in woodcarving. A friend, that recently died from Alzheimer's, was doing ball-in-boxes and chains that his father had taught him. Bud challenged me to try it. I started about 19 month's ago carving western caricatures. I finished 5 cowboy caricatures. I gave these away as gifts, one of which, I gave to Bud a couple of months before he died.
I belong to Western Wautagua Woodcarvers Group. It is a loosely structured get together where skilled carvers help those with an interest in woodcarving start out. This is where I first "drew blood" was at a regular Tuesday morning meeting. The meetings are held at the Western Wautagua Community Center. The group consists of caricature, decoy, birds of prey, chip and walking stick carvers.
I entered a piece in the Hickory, NC show in October and received an Honorable mention. The piece was called "Boots and Saddle". It was a non-painted one piece with an old McClellan army saddle hanging on a limb off of a dead tree stump. The saddle had an army bugle hanging for the rear and a pair of boots leaning up against the stump. The idea was from the horse calvary days when "Boots and Saddle" was bugled to saddle up.
I am entering a duck in the show in Charlotte, NC on February 18, 2011. I friend that is a master birds of prey carver gave me guidance through the carving of this duck. It is loosely structured female green wing teal. The cut-out was bought a a yard sale and given to me. The pattern blank apparently was a mis-cut but I used it for the practice since it was gift.
I thoroughly enjoy woodcarving and appreciate all the free assistance and advice that so many local carver's give. I plan to improve to the point that my pieces are put on sale. At the moment I am carving for the experience, enjoyment and to give the pieces as gifts.
