    Slo,

Thanks so much for the response and advise. I really appreciate it and I too, am favoring the smaller carvings, such as Santas, gnomes and toppers.

    Again, thanks,

    Shawn

    Hello Slow,

I am just starting out and have a question about the best v-tool and gouge to start out with. I am looking at the PFEIL "Swiss Made." I bought a 1 3/8" Mike Shipley knife. Should I get a second knife with a larger blade? I just want to get started and figured I would go ahead a get a few good tools to start with. I guess what I am asking is what is the best all around v-tool for making hair and the best all around gouge for beginners such as me? Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

    Again, thanks,

    Shawn

Hi Slow. You are doing good on your Jack Price carvings, but it looks to me like you have also watched Lynn's videos, by the way you have done the brows, and eyes. Next time try to come about half way down the eyeball, and give him an eyelid. Then generally you don't see all of the iris, maybe only half to three-quarters of the iris and pupil.Look at yourself in a mirror, and see how much iris is showing. Try that and see if you like the difference. When you have all that white, with the black dot, it make them look really surprised.
You can try that, or tell me to mind my own business. When I started caricatures, I followed Jack's methods, and it really got me going in the right direction. I do some summer classes, and always make them start with a facestick. I do a six inch block, one end is the facestick, then turn it around and do the little person.

Good luck, and keep having fun. Tom
