Thanks for the information about making a blade. Reading between the lines, I hear you say: "Don't rush this." I've reshaped 2 pairs of single-edged Mora 171 to carving sharp and it took far more time than I expected.
I've started my "planer knife." Cut the hook tip off the Mora #188 with a Dremel cutoff and rounded that with a stone in the drill press. The sweep of the blade is between a 4/60 and a 5/60. Chalked up a couple of chainsaw files and changed the bevels from 30 degrees to 15 degrees. 220 paper on a big dowel and it was coming along. Then 400 grit and most of the file marks disappeared. Did the flat back on the 400 paper, too.
The fun part is testing it! Tried shaving some cedar. It's rough but it works as I had hoped. Probably go 1000 then 4000 with slip stones tomorrow. I expect that the fine grits & honing will take far longer than the time I've put into this so far.
