    It is your paint brushes?... Do you have decorative short handle paint brushes. Do have the zero numbers which are tiny, tiny brushes with a little hair. I use 8/0 and 10/0. These paint brushes are cheaper then painting brushes and are made for the kind of painting we do on wood. I find people use regular brushes which are long handled and long hairs which are not good for painting small areas. Two# you need to plant your wrist on something to keep it stable....some people use wood plank about 2 inches wide and two feet long..... and they hold it in their hand and other wrist is on the board ready to paint any small detail..., Three sometimes you need to practice a step before you paint, I do that when I am unsure on how to paint it.     sorry, no hickory ..in the islands. Don might have the mini arbor tech...I have been looking at one my self. Actual you will have to use a side grinder on your larger pieces....Don Sexton has major information on the tools he use....the only thing is you got sawdust instead of chips.
