    Hey Tom,
Sorry I haven't checked my messages in a while and just now saw this. I'll try to help out here but if it's confusing just ask and I'll get it. If you want your feather to have a bend in it like mine I would start out with a thick enough piece of wood to allow for the bend. What ever the thickness of your wood is what you have to work with and just cut (with band saw) about a 1/2 inch think peice in the shape of the bend of the feather. Basswood is good so you're right there. I say 1/2 inch thickness so it will give you plenty to work with. It might cause you to carve off more but if you're beginning you will get the hang of it better before you carve off something you didn't want to. If you're comfortable with it you can go thinner and it will save you time. The grain of the wood should run with the long length of the feather.
Before I write too much let me know if I'm getting you on the right track or have I lost you?

    Hi Steve,
I'm new to this forum and this is my first post. I'm 71, a falconer, and never carved a thing before but I'd like to carve a redtail feather------it's at the top of my "bucket list".

I've got some basswood and some RT feathers to use as guides.

    How should I start?

Hope you don't mind me asking------I'm not interested in selling or anything---just want to carve a feather. Any help you can give me is appreciated.

I saw your owl feather on a post from several years ago.

    Thanks,

    tom

    Hey,
I haven't been on in a while. I'm making it pretty well i guess. I thought I would be able to get to a class but I don't know now. I'm going to refinance my house and hopefull cut some of my payment down. I'm just not having enough money at the end of the month.+

Hey! Haven't heard from you in a long while. Hope everything is well with you.

I've taken a new job at the hospital and I am now full time. I am the clinical nurse educator for the 5th floor at Blount Memorial. It was a major raise for me and I am enjoying my new role. It's been a challenge going from nursing supervisor to this, but it has been a good change for me. I have a great supportive staff and director.

I've gone back to some carving, some guitar playing, and now I am doing some woodburning. My hand is still not as strong as it used to be, but I hope it will eventually get there.

So what is new with you?
