Default WIP Hopi Matriarch

Hopi Matriarch
14" inches tall
4" inches at the widest part
Prescott, AZ. Shaggy Juniper

Hi All:
Thought I'd share a WIP of an elderly Indian woman that I'm carving in Juniper for some friends of ours. Actually they gave me several Juniper limbs so as a thank you I'm carving this for them. They are very much into Arizona Indian culture and like my husband and I they are Arizona State Parks Site Stewards. We monitor petroglyphs, and Indian ruins for vandalism and preservation.

As always I appreciate your comments and questions

She's going to be lovely Kathy!
Are you using gouges on her?
Your work space is so neat and tidy, unlike mine!
I like your holders for the tools!

Kathy,

She looks really good, please post her when you finish. I have a nice piece of seasoned juniper, a lot of shades in it. Only carve with edge blade tools, maybe a little hard. I am interested also in Native figure carving.

Thank you,
Hi There how are things in Northern CA. today...cold here snow off and on very pretty. Sun shining at present. Sure different from the Bay Area.

As to your question: I'm using a combination of both hand and power tools--a lot of the hogging out was done with power. Yes, to gouges too.
WCI magazine had in it's tip section about two years ago this tool holder. It's from WalMart and is used to make ice cylinders for your water bottle. It was during the summer that I bought it...so probably seasonal.

Had to laugh when you mentioned my neat and tidy work space...I most always take my WIP pictures when I'm though carving for the day...do the carving mess is cleaned up....I share my work space with hubby..so I like to leave things picked up for him....there was a time I didn't have to do that..but after we bought the hot rod we down sized our work bench so the hot rod would fit in the garage/shop.

Hi you two:
Not sure about what you meant by "I think Fluke together"??????
Hope you both are well and staying warm and Art is getting lots of carving done.
Hugs

Thank you, Carl and I will post some images again soon

I'm really enjoying carving Juniper and I too like the shades of color in it. The darker/reddish brown shades carry the cedar like fragrance I've found.

It's hard to live in Arizona and not be influenced by the Indian/Native culture.

Merry Christmas

Hi Kathy, Hey Kid I think you are getting the hang of Carving. I think this is going to be one of your best carvings. Going to be a very nice piece. Merle
