Default Pine knots

Well I'm guessing that the answer to this question should be pretty obvious....so if you want to take a shot first go ahead I have a pretty good sense of humor. I want to carve some wood spirits ( or at least try to ) in some pine knots like the picture, where the heck do you find them ? Ive looked at alot of pine trees this week and didnt see one ! What am I doing wrong ?

The piece you pictured is where a branch connected to the trunk of a pine tree, but it was from the rotted shell of a tree, not a live tree.

Dave, don't look up in the trees, look on the forest floor among the leaf mold and other forest debris ! That's okay that you didn't know where to look!
I think there's places that sell them also!

Check out Wiz's carvings, really nice guy and his carvings are really cool!

Lots of good information for ya to consider and I learned something too. I've never carved pine knots before, but do fine them very interesting. The shape of your pine knot is really cool and Claude drew up a good idea for you.

I have found many of those pine knots along crooked creeks and lakes where piles of wood debris collect from flood or high water. Most of the ones I have found are packed with the hardened resin of pine sap. They carve well and polish up beautifully . The way the sides taper in a sweeping motion make great hair and beard and i use the thicker part for carving the face itself. I hope this helps. If anyone needs a collection of pics to use as patterns I will be happy to share all the ones I have found over the years.

I just like the whole look of the pine knot carving. Ive seen quite a few of the other carvers work and I would like to give it a try. I have seen the knots for sale on different web sites, but for me, they are pricey pieces of wood to practice on, so I thought finding them would be part of the charm of carving them. So far however I havnt found a dang one ! I think Ill try the creek beds and lakeshores though, after all a day by the water has to be good....wish me luck
