Default Owl in Sassafras

Hi all,
Haven't been carvin' much lately because my wife had a looooooong "honey-do" list. A fairly large sassafras tree came down in a storm a few years back so I called a friend who has a portable saw mill to come out and cut some planks for me. My imagination took off and saw an owl so grabbed my angle grinder, die grinder, hand tools and all kinds of sandpaper. The piece is 5' 10" wide and 15" tall, the owl is 26" wide by 10 1/2" tall with only dark walnut danish oil applied. The wings and tail are oversized on purpose, made it a little more dramatic to me. Used the dark because the wood itself was so light the owl almost didn't show up. Hope you like him and thanks for taking a peek.
Dan

Very nice job. I've never power carved Sassafras, but I sure love the smell when hand carving.

Another nice one Dan. Not familiar with sassafras but it has a nice grain pattern that blends nicely into your design. You might have to build a gallery soon.

Hi Eric,
The tree had a pretty good bend to it is why I had it milled but didn't realize it had such nice grain. Thanks

Hi Bill,
The aroma of it is wonderful and very "clean" smelling but from what I've read its pretty toxic. Thanks for the kind words.

Hi Dick,
You're right about building a gallery, I've got way too many carvings around the house. I really don't like to sell my creations but recently sold a couple, an area art gallery is after me to display so maybe I'll take them up on their offer, maybe! Thank you my friend for your nice comments.
