Default Our new door *****

I found this piece while bush walking near our home a few years ago. The eye appeared in a box of stuff my son had. Id forgotten that I had given it too him when he was young. I was tempted to do more shaping but in the end decided to leave good enough alone. It now sits above our front door keeping an eye on visitors.

Those things are just crazy good. I like the inspiration.

Root systems of spruce trees are usually spread out and quite shallow. Friend outside of town carved the stump into a globe shape, trimmed the root system, added two eyes (not as goulish as yours) and painted it up to be an Octopus with a 10' leg span. Just finished and now buried under 2' of snow. Creepy when I drive up to his place in the dark.

Thanks for the feedback. The eyeball is about 45mm round so I guess its about 300x200mm. Its pretty rotten so its quite light. Our local gum trees can be very heavy. That Octopus sounds great!!

Driftwood pieces are so unique, little chance of finding any of that here. Don't you get paranoid about whacking a sand grain or three with your carving tools?
The tributaries of the Fraser River are either trickles or bridge-busting torrents. No lakes and I'm 10+ hr East from tidewater/Dean Channel/Kitimat.
Lots of massive carvings all over the valley, most are far too big to lug around for show-and-tell and too unique to steal. There's a little 7' tall grizzly bear chainsaw carving on my neighbor's front door step. The local deer walk right by it almost every day and pay no attention. I've lived on the coast of BC and in the interior for 40 years. If you have any interest at all, very difficult not to be exposed to a world of wood carving.

Western Red cedar is free for the taking, more than you could carve in a hundred lifetimes. I figure out where the shake-block cutters are working, all their reject stuff is 24"/60cm lengths. One knot, as thick as a pencil and they can't sell it. I've bought custom cut bigger pieces and some rainbow WRC. . . . mostly tough as nails when dried out.

WRC trees often are really flared out/buttressed at the bottom. Normally 50% of the core is rotten. Cut a 4'/120cm length of stump and up-end it. Dig out the rot, stand it up on your property as a gigantic flower pot with a flared rim.

If you would like to sort and to search through some 40,000 carvings, mostly native BC stuff, bentwood boxes and all:
University of British Columbia, Museum of Anthropology website.

I think this is way cool! I love things with eyeballs. Most of my drawings I do have eyeballs in some shape or form in them, so this is really appealing to me!
