I started this one as an Indian brave, but I think the wood has a mind of it's own. Pieces kept chipping off. Now, I don't think he looks like an Indian. What do you think?

Hi Wanda: I find that most found wood for sure has a mind of it's own always a challenge. I think there is an Indian in that wood just keep working at it. I know it can be madding when pieces chip off and usually right where you don't want them too. I think this has potential don't give up. Kathy

Wanda maybe it doesnt look like an indian now but there is lots of wood there. That is the problem with drift wood it can splinter and chip. I cant wait to see what you end up with what ever it is it will be great. Colin

Kathy, Thanks for your words of advice. He was a real challenge today. I had his eyes almost done three times and at the last minute they'd crumble or become Amer-Asian as one guy in the carving club calls them. (One American and the other one Asian) It may not be an Indian hidden in the foundling, but I do see a face. Wanda

Colin, Thanks for your vote of confidence on this piece. I really don't care if it turns out not to be an Indian hidden in the wood. I have a spot in the garden that needs a wood spirit and whatever kind he becomes, he will be welcome, if my Mom doesn't talk me out of him first! Driftwood can be a royal pain, but I love the twist and turns God put in it. This is by far the sandiest driftwood I have ever seen. Wanda

Hi Wanda, I know what it's like to have one eye come out good and the other fall a part on ya. Cottonwood Bark can do the same thing to ya. You know whether Indian or Asian he'll be a woodspirit...so don't fret about it. Your creativity is what matters and he'll be just fine. Kathy

Hi Wanda, Just keep chippin' away, it will turn out great in the end. In my opinion a few chips here and there just give a piec character. Dan Dan |

Thanks Kathy, it's nice to know someone else has had that problem. I thought the eyes were a problem but then when working on his lips, they fell off. Then I had to take the nose down a bit more. I may just make him a vague image instead of a lot of details. Wanda

Dan, I like the wood spirits both ways, kind of depends on the wood. It'll let you know if it wants a lot of details or just a hint of detail. I am thinking about trying oils again to help preserve this piece. Any suggestions? Wanda

Hi Wanda, I'm just an amatuer at this, but whenever I have a difficult piece I put danish oil on and it seems to harden it a bit, at least it makes it easier to cut. Dan |
