Okay, new finishing techniques. The best way to hold these little critters while drying is a 5 gallon paint stirrer stick with small holes drilled 8" apart to match round toothpicks. Cut the pointed ends off one end of the toothpicks and drill the same size small hole as the paint stick. Place the toothpick cut end in the paint stick and the bird on the standing toothpick. Use 3 coats of polyurethane to finish, let dry 24 hours between coats and lightly sand. The foam sanding blocks from Home Depot, Lowes or Walmart cut in half work very well. Use coarse for first sanding after carving then fine for finish sanding and between ployuratahne coats. For more directions email kurtnjudy@yahoo.com |

I'm lazy with my finishing. I've been finishing mine with Howard Feed 'n Wax. It's a whole lot less work. After carving, I sand with 100 grit, 120, 220, and sometimes 400. Then a coat of the Feed 'n Wax, which I let sit overnight. In the morning I wipe off the excess with a rag, buff it with a shoe brush, and when I come home at night it's dry and ready to handle. The hardest part of the whole process, carving included, is getting the dang smooth with the 100 grit. Getting all the tool marks out is a real pain.
