Default Unicorn Prototype

Almost did not post him, bu decided the opportunity for feedback outweighed the number of things I don't really like on this one. He started out as a pen, but the drill for the pen parts ran out the side and that part got cut off. Decided to go ahead and not waste the blank, since this was the first time I tried a horse and the chances were he'd end up in the burn barrel. Got him near done and thought he looked like a bottle stopper, my SIL has asked a couple times for a unicorn stopper. I don't like the horn, think I'll end up changing it for a fat short one in ebony or vegetable ivory. Don't like the way he sits on top of the bottle either, prefer not to see the top of the bottle . On the upside, the figure came out good enough to save him from the fire. The horse in KDispoto's thread Santa's Feeling the Fourth, which he attributes to Harley Refsal was my inspiration.

I think he looks pretty good Brian. I do agree with you about the horn. I would make it thicker and a little longer with a gradual taper to the point. Other than than, I think it looks great.

My attempts at flat plane have been dismal. they start as flat plane, but end up general carving, can't stop trying to detail. Yours look like a very good start, nice large planes. I admire good flat plane technique. Have Harley's new book, am going to give it another shot. Keep posting!

I agree with BrandantR on the horn...thicker and longer with a gradual taper.

Brian: the cuts are very nice to indicate the face ..I agree withBrandant about the horn .. but also make a few more cuts to separate the ears and and then on another one cut some triangles on the inside of the ears to give it a hollowed out look .. just a suggestion .. but a good job brian

I appreciate the input, thanks all. Working on the horn. SIL has her hooks out, not sure I'll manage another pic of this one.
CarlT, I know what you mean- it can be hard to stop cutting.
Gene, thanks for the suggestions. I will include them in the next one.

Can you find a slab of antler? Bigger, longer horn with a spiral surface?
The beast looks really good. Obviously a Unicorn.

I like him! I would sugest lopping off the original horn and drilling in a bigger one. Unicorns had larger than you'd think horns. Just when you think hey that's too long...you stick it on and think hey...that looks good! It's weird...but it balances him somehow. Great project.
