Smile Trygg carvings

Hello,I am uaually an antique doll collector but some years ago an elderly friend left me his collection of Trygg carvings he collected while boating in Canada and stopping at the same small island each year,I am very proud of this grouping and the characters they seem to represent.I recently moved and left them with family but they are being shipped to me now and I can post pix when they arrive-there are quite a few and all signed simply Trygg, some had orig prices of $8.00 and $9.00-these were obviously done by a son who settled on this tiny island-When they arrive there is a history of the sailings and dates attached-I welcome other photos and information as they are delightful creatures-jacqueshafer@aol.com

Trygg had 3 sons who carved beside him

The fathers name was Carl J. trygg

his sons were

Lars Trygg

Carl O. Trygg

Nils Trygg

The bottom of the carving should indicate who carved them ..

They could be by Lars Trygg .. they all lived in sweden and Lars migrated to Montrel Canda ..

the bottom of the carvings should have a N. Trygg (Nils) L. Trygg (Lars)

or C.O . ( C.O. trygg) on the bottom of them

All together the family did over 10,000 carvings and they were sold everywhere ..

below is a example of 2 different brothers carvings

The first one is C.O Trgg
The last 3 are Lars Trygg

Gene , what did the sell for at the time , what do they go for now? I'm very curious about the sales and marketing of my new found love.

I really hate my job, and I know making a living at carving is tuffer than winning the lottery. but I'm curious how others have do it int he past and how poepl are doing it now.

even though carvings may go for very little , I fell the value is much greater

I just found this out last night. It's no surprise I guess that the figures I fell in love with around here look a lot like "Scandinavian" carving :-)

therandalnight--I have a friend who has been able to develop her carving into a full time business--She spent a number of years going for as much exposure as possible. She wrote articles for newspapers, contacted television stations repeatedly. She was a very good carver in the first place. Her carvings became well known. She now has a mail order business with orders coming from all over the country. PR is absolutely necessary if you want people to buy a lot of your carvings. They need to know that you carve and that your carvings are attractive to them. THe price should be appropriate for their income until you build a reputation that will allow you to charge more. It takes years. Go to public events and give demonatrations. Show your carvings at art shows. People need to know what you do and that they like it.

I picked up a C O Trygg carving at a Wisconsin flea market for $8.00. A friend of mine who enjoys plane carving made several copies of the figure.

I am also interested in that style of carving, even if I have problems stopping while it is still a flat carving...

But I do not despair and collect the info related to that style when I find something interesting. Someday, I will be able to stop before it's too late.

Like this C O Trygg - Swedish Canadian Caricature Carver

It seems that what was selling $10 shouldsell/is selling now for5 $100-$150

From what I gather, the Trygg family didn't get rich from their carving. More than likely, they sold their like any one of us would sell at a local craft fair or flea market for whatever price they could get. Needless to say, they're worth far more now than whatever the Trygg's got for them.

I guess you have to be famous first, and then sell your work to get rich.

While I won't share my thoughts on the business practices of the Hudson's Bay Company (there. it's done!) they have a reputation of keeping meticulous records. Some of this history might not take too much digging.
Personally, I believe it's worth trying to sort out. At least when you hit many, many dead ends, you can't say that you didn't try.
Market values? Hard to say with a volume of production. 10X - 20X the original prices tends to fit most of the things in my collections.
