Not exactly flat plane, but it was fun. Watched a Allen Goodman video last night, I am really trying to focus on making clean cuts. No fuzzies as Allen would say! This is an Enlow inspired carving. -kurt |

Great start Kurt! Try making small "S's" when you carve the beard so that the hair is not so straight. The same with the hair. Try carving more curves from the part in the hair. You'll find that it will really had to your carving. I also noticed that your wood has a lot of grain. Is that basswood or are you using pine? If you're just starting out you might want to try getting some basswood. It's easier to learn and practice the different techniques on because of it's close grain. What you're doing is the way I got started only I started out carving Skylar Johnson woodspirits on canes. Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestion, I am using basswood, I soaked it in water for the picture. I am gonna try some smaller projects like this and really try and refine my technique. Gonna try a shelf elf next week I think, so I will have a chance to do the beard thing again. Kurt Quote:

Kurt: I notice a small piece missing from carvings left eyelid. Here's a tip: for smaller carvings, carve over a table or workbench. Every few minutes, sweep the chips off the table (into a wastebasket, maybe...). When a chip breaks off in the wrong place (such as an eyelid), it can easily be found on the tabletop and glued back in place, using glue of choice. I use Elmer's or superglue. The breakoffs happen all the time to me, so don't feel like you're alone when one happens to you. Sometimes I'm lucky and the chip doesn't completely come off. In that case, I can put a drop of superglue in the crack and press the chip back down with a nail until the glue dries. I then go get a favorite beverage and give it several minutes to dry completely, and then go back to carving. Claude |
