Flat plane, chainsaw carving. Could you call that cross-carving? Really nice job Butch.

Talk about a different perspective!
There is my miniature Oscar posted right next to your super Oscar.
My first thought was wow that is good.
Then I thought - - just the shavings from this fantastic example of Flat Plane Carving would make like a gerzillion of my little guys.
Now I want to go out and find me a tree and do a Woodspirit to greet visitors at our front gate.
Your post is downright inspiring and you should be proud.
A final thought comes to me too. Heavens sake dont drop yours on your foot or anything. When I drop mine they tend to skittle off and hide in tiny little places that are hard to reach.

Talking Oskar finished.

My Oskar is finished. Sorry about the background matching the carving but the light was pretty harsh so I moved him into the shade of my shed. I painted him with boiled linseed oil then sprayed with satin finish spar varnish. From the top of his base [bottom of shoe] to top of his hat is 34". I sanded all of the flat surfaces leaving only the minimum of chain marks for character.

Thanks for all the kind comments. Maybe after a few of these I'll try carving "Saturday Night" from the Refsal book.
