I cant believe I came across one of my first flat plane attempts that I thought was gone .. I did it over ten years ago and it still looks pretty good .... As far as I can remember .. it was taken from one of Harleys books and it was a joy to see it again .. I know there are many of you that have pieces you dont even remember you did .. that someone else owns or has been put in attic ..every once in awhile this happens and brings back memories .. I know people tell me .. you remember when you carved this for me 8 or 9 years ago and I cant remember sometimes what it was .. This old one brought back memories .. Gene..

That is pretty neat Gene, the fact that you still have the carving, and the carving itself. Great job. BobT |

I've only been carving for 60+ years, but I don't understand the difference between "flat plane" carving and caricature carving. Did a search on "flat plane" and still don't.

As I understand it caricature carving can be done in the flat plane style but may also be done in a more smooth representation.. caricature is the exageration of features in either human or animal representation, and does not necessarily have to be done in the flat plane style. The flat plane is done with well planned cuts that remain as individual "planes" on the carving. Some of these remain quite true to this concept and some allow some softening of the angles between the planes or flat cuts. An exagerated caracature must still have recognizable features of the individual represented. A good idea of what caracature work is would be the political cartoons of our various leaders. Al |

![]() ![]() Phil .. heres two different carvings next to one another a flat plane and caricature .. do you see the difference in the cuts .. Both great looking carvings .. but the cuts are different .. flat plane originated in Europe with the old figure carvers of that time .. Gene
