It happened more than once that I had to cover or remove a bad paint job.

Some of my carvings are painted opaque for that reason... and I had to remove the paint of the face of my last hobo because I over did it.

Time to experiment...

I think they are worth it, and you will learn in the process.

Hi Herb. I agree with the others...that the antiquing is best applied after your piece is painted. Personally, I prefer to use waterbased paints (acrylics), mediums and finishes because a) they don't smell b) not as messy c) easy clean up and d) can be easier to fix mistakes. For antiquing I use 'Americana Staining Antiquing Medium' which you can find at any folk art paint supply. When I first used this I really messed up too. I just used it straight from the bottle, added a bit of umber then started slapping it on. Well, it was drying faster than I could get it on and then it wasn't rubbing off and it was way too dark!!! Panic! So I ran to the kitchen sink and ran it under warm water...and that did the trick! Whew! Next time I will thin the medium with a waterbased thinner/inhibitor so it's not so thick and won't dry so fast and added way less umber to the mixture. I think we all learn thru trial and error so keep tryin'! Hope this was of some help. Good luck!

Leslie

My painting needs more practise! however, Tn Artist has given the answer I'd try. Gene also tells it as it is, we all have bad paint days.
