Default An old lady

Here is a prototype for a flat carving carving of an old nurse. And that is another try at flat carving too...

I started with a design from a book, and changed the proportions and a few other things. Again, I liked the face better BEFORE a cut I shouldn't have made... So I am learning, again, and slowly..., that less is more.

But I tried to correct my mistake the best I could, and will use it as a guide for the real thing. That's how I like to experiment, directly on the wood, and I like to see the before and after carvings. I will make a drawing from that first try and will correct a few things for the second try. What I want to do is a flat plane caricature of the type of nurse from the early years of the medical care as a gift for a real modern nurse that I know..

Right now, this one has only 1 coat of Minwax instead of 2, and tomorrow I will apply the Feed&Wax. I think it will look better with only 1 coat of Minwax.

Tomorrow, I will show it side by side with the precedent carving that has 2 coats of Minwax.

Comments are welcome,

Gilles

Gilles, Way to go. I love all carving of the flat plane style. I haven't posted or done much viewing on the forum lately. Getting ready for a school display. Should be fun. Al

Nice job Gilles . Curious about the finish . Is that the 209 minwax ? I just came across some feed and wax . Can you coat over that ?

Yes, it's the Minwax 209.

Coat over Feed&Wax? No...

It really a mix of beeswax and carnauba wax and orange oil and can be applied directly on wood or on finished wood. But you can't apply a finish over any type of wax.

Howard Feed-N-Wax

What I like about Feed&Wax is that it is not as shinny as a typical wax.

I really like your nurse! Great details on the shoes and cherchef too... Sorta looks like the ole nurse that used to come in and 'enjoy' sticking me when I had my operation! Ha! What kind of wood did you use...the wood grain certainly enhanced the carving. Thanks!

Thanks guys... I think I begin to know what style I like for my carvings.

What wood? Only basswood man, only basswood. Check the photo for the "before" picture of the wood.

That's the effect of the Minwax that you see there.

For the next carving, I will change the orientation of the grain to have the stripes on the front and the back. After reading about the grain orientation for faces carving, I noticed that it is mentioned that the nose can detach while carving it with the grain the way I used it. So it was suggested to have the grain the other way.

I was told that the face looks a bit too much like a man. I'll have to work on that detail.

She looks like an old mtn woman, they never was too pretty. Course after taking care of 7-8 children and tending to everything it wore them down abit. But you carved her just right and I like her and the finish on this carving also. Just a neat job. What size is she??

Your doing a great job on theses flat planes.
