I hope you all don't mind the post. I have been following Gene on You Tube for a while and decided to try and carve a full size piece. I chose a mike shipley pattern, did not include ears or seperate the arms from the body like his pattern, but I think it turned out OK. One problem I did have was I tried to create an Antique solution as Mike suggested: Linseed Oil, Mineral Spirits and raw umber "oil paint". I used a quality tube oil paint, but it would not dissolve. I coated the carving anyway, I really like it. I can wait to do more. Regards, Kurt (newbie) Retired Navy Chesapeake, VA |

Kurt .. Bravo ! .. for your first piece you did great .. I wish my first carving would have looked like that .. but it didnt .. I think you terrific BTW .. you really have to stir the oil paint alot .. and give it some time and it will dissolve Gene

Kurt, I to am a fairly new carver. My first projects were Mike Shipley designs. Ialso have had the same problem with the Boiled Linseed Oil and Artist Pigment. I have found that mixing the oil paint and mineral spirits first until the oil paint is disolved and then adding the BLO and then mixing untill all is well disolved works out great. But ,this will take a little time if you are doing this by hand. I think I remember hearing or reading somwhere that you can use an old kitchen blender if you are careful. Maybe get one from Goodwill for that purpose only. And nice job on your first carving.
