Default My first flat plane

Hey everyone. I have never attempted a flat plane carving. Truth is I wasn't trying for one this time. I have just watched so many of Gene's videos that some of his teaching just ran out my fingers! Not sure this is true flat plane carving but I thought it was close enough to post here. I watched Gene's video on golf ball carving. As you can tell, this is not a golf ball. It is a softball. Found it to be a lot of fun to carve in. What do you think?

Mark

Great carving, Mark! I'd sure call it flat plane. That's what I call making the subject fit the medium.

Great work Mark! Never thought of carving a softball! Where did you get the idea?

Thumbs up Re: My first flat plane

Mark .. I have seen this new way of carving a soft ball .. similar to a golf ball .. but the innner core is a little different .

Mark .. you did a great job on it too .. yes I would say it is falt plane for the facial features .. your subject is unique and the carving and painting are wonderful ..

excellent job with a unique flare to it ..

Gene

The idea came quite by accident. I was walking in the park and found the softball lying in the grass at the edge of the field. The cover was partially torn(probably from a great hit!) I picked it up when all of the sudden I got the idea! I said, "That must have really hurt to get hit that hard!" The rest is history. I had seen Gene's video on carving a golf ball, and the core of the softball seemed similar, even though it is foam. I think that you just have to have your antenna up all the time for a new idea. My wife says I only have two things I do. 1.Carve 2. Think about carving. That is pretty much it. Thanks for all the great response. Glad you liked the idea.
