I have to say that I'm not that new to carving, but I'm finding that I'm new to the lingo. So I'm looking at the flat plane carvings scratching my head thinking hey they look like caricature carvings. Can someone tell me the difference between flat plane and caricature? Is it how it's carved that makes the difference? Sorry for being a bonehead.

Flat plane is one subset of caricature carving... it is a style of carving, in my opinion. It is difficult to do well, as the cuts have to be planned in advance so that a series of flat cuts (planes) will result in the eye seeing the shape intended.

I think one could make a flat plane relief carving as well, although I don't remember ever seeing one. Maybe that would be a challenge to Gene Messer or Hyung Jun Yong.

Claude, That makes sense now. I looked through a few of them (flat plane and caricature) to see the differences and I see what you are saying. I appreciate the help.

Thumbs up Re: Lost

Kol .. Claude is right .. flat plane is a type of carving usually done only with a knife and few tools ...

The figure is left unsanded and the cuts are done in a large flat plane cut ..

look at the faces and you will see the different style
