Default Is Jack Price flat plane

I'm kinda curious is Jack Prices 2' guys flat plane. The reason I ask is I had to take some test and at the reception desk the woman noticed a library book I had of Refsal scandinavian carving and asked about it. I told her I was hoping to learn flat plane. Anyway she asked to look through it while I was having test done. When I finished I gave her one the the little guys I carve and she looked at it and said Why this is flat plane carving. It kind of shocked me so when I got home and checked a couple I could see how she may think that. So my question is how many consider Jack Prices work to be flat plane carvings

Robert .. I have seen Jack Prices minatures and his are fantastic .. but he himself will tell you .. he doesnt carve in the flat plane style ..

But any carver that basically carves only with a knife will produce carvings very similar to flat plane work because it has that knife stroke look ..

I dont think its very important to label Prices work as flat plane .. but if you watched his original video he has on carving a compact character .. Jack uses only a knife for 90 % of his carving .. so it is similar to flat plane work ...

Look at the pictures below of the carvings .. The first 2 are Jack Prices the third is Harleys .. the fourth is Gunnerson

did you see the difference in the faces

Gene thanks for the response and the pictures. I do see the differents and after looking at the pictures I would guess the body of mine could be flat plane but not the face. I just finished Oskar from Rafsal book and had trouble with the face although for the first one of his I was not unhappy

Hi Robert
as a complete newbie, I was wondering the same as regards Flat Plane carving. My first contact with taking up carving miniatures was Gene's videos on YouTube, excellent tuition! Later I saw some of JP's minatures and got the book and DVD. He carves with a sword!! LOL!
I really liked the idea of carving "wee guys" but 3 - 1/4" like one of Gene's. I too have tried the Refsal "Oskar" but 3-1/4" high. He kind of turned out like my interpretation of a Messer/Price/Refsal wee guy! LOL! I only use a knife and a "V" gouge for hair etc, I'm not sure if my wee guys are flat plane or not but they seem to be evolving into a 'my style' the more I do................. more to the point......... I love it!

Hi Simon,
My interest in miniatures was when I saw one of Genes little guys on this site. (before his u tubes) I then got JP book and started carving them Gene put some tutorial on this site that I followed and also now his videos. Thanks to Bob T I have them on DVD. I just got a copy of Refsal book from the library and did Oskar 4 1/2 an Sara 4" high I also did Shipleys Bear 3" high but I need a lot of practice to perfect the flat plane style. and to quote you ...I love it. Thanks for the response
