Default What if Karl was a Canadian...

instead of a Scandinavian...

While trying to pickup Harley Refsal technique (which I absolutely can't) for flat plane carving from his DVD, I started to carve on my own and decided to give a more american look to the figure.

We "normally" have cold winters and a lot of snow, so here is my version of Karl Oskar... Carl Tremblay, a french Canadian character

I'm still not sure about the name though, he doesn't look like a Carl Tremblay. He may be more a "Joe the Canadian". Any ideas?

Note that he has big boots, and a warm fur collar. His hat is also quite warm.

This was carved entirely with my new razor knife of course. I had to fight myself to use only one knife for the own carving instead of using a gouge or two.

Gilles

Gilles,
Thats a nice job there eh. We certainly had an easy winter this year. Now it is time for pollen, blackflies, July, fall, then winter again. Carl looks alot like my Uncle Edmund from St. Agnes.

Looks great. The flat plane carving is great also. The only thing I see missing is "eh?" painted/carved on the front of the base...

Gilles, You nailed it buddy. Way to go. Now do one in shorts and show everyone what it is really like up here above the 49th. Al

Thanks for the nice comments guys, and for the suggestions.

Another one in shorts is a good idea. I was looking for ideas in the same style for my next one. I already see him, with a beer in hand...

Bob the Bundler? yes, he looks more like a Bundler Bob than a Carl. Bundler as in "a person who dress warmly, like bundled up in winter clothes. (I had to do a search for the real meaning... )

Uncle Edmond? it's funny, my wife also had an uncle Edmond, and he had that look, but summer style.

Claude, I also like it... short and sweet... The base is only temporary until the Minwax is dry enough so I can put the guy on a table. But I need to make a few bases for some of my caricatures that would need one.

I may do that. "Eh..." I once met a guy named Garry in Boston who was always saying "Eh, eh, eh, ehhhh..."

Gilles
