Default Hillbilly in maple

Over a year ago I thought I'd try doing Gene's hillbilly tutorial, but from a piece of maple that had been sitting on my desk. I got just a little bit into it and then got sidetracked with something else. I saw it sitting on my desk again over the weekend and thought I'd finish it up.

That maple is hard, which is why the cuts aren't as deep as they probably should be. It might be a while before I try another caricature in maple.

It's about 3-1/2 inches tall. The block I started with was about 1" wide and about 3/4" thick.

Nice job, especially considering it's maple. I did a stylized dolphin in maple almost a year ago and said the same thing - it'll be a while before I try maple again, I still have 2 pieces waiting for my to get motivated again. Thanks for sharing

Eric

Thanks, Herb. It was kinda fun, if a little frustrating.

Thanks, Eric. Yeah, the maple is pretty hard. Although I rather enjoyed carving my little dogs and a few other stylized things in it. But the hillbilly has too much detail to easily do it in the harder woods. At least, for me.

You did a nice job Jim,plus with the maple which isnt easy to whittle. Only thing about maple it holds the details{cuts} better than a soft wood.

Good work again on this Hillbilly.

Forrest

Jim...I think he's adorable, and you did a great job in that hard ol' maple! I tried carving a maple egg once, and nearly cut my left hand off....never will I try that wood again! Nice job! Bonnie

Amazing - I've got a piece of Choke Cherry roughed out as a trout that I've had for about 4 years. Got to finish it at some point.

Great Job
Bob
