Default Gene Messer Videos on FTP

Hello all, I have posted Gene's latest, Carving A Big Headed Santa on my FTP in FLV format. I posted the VLC Player there also in case someone needs it.

This stuff is there for anyone that wants to try it out. If you don't know how to use anFTP, let me know and I will try to help.

IP Address: 72.16.132.210

The Following is Case Sensitive,

User Name: GeneMesser
(no space)

Password: flatplane

Give it a shot, you cannot hurt the computer this is on. There have been thousands of attempts to hack this box over the past 10 years, nobody has been successful yet.

If this works out, I can post more. Please drop me a pm or entry here, letting me know about successes or failures.

By the way, FTP Transfer Protocol is built right in to Internet Explorer and it seems most people don't know that.

Thanks,
Bob

Bob & Gene,

It is because of guys like you that keeps carving alive. Always willing to do what ever it takes to help us beginners. I truly appreciate all you guys do and i'm sure everyone else here does also. If it was not for Gene's videos I happen to find while surfing the web I would of never started carving.

Thank You

Bob; I'm with Tucker 1931 (and probably a lot of others who won't admit it Talking) I have no idea what FTP in FLV and VLC mean. But if it's something to help me view Genes videos then I'm interested. I have the DVD that you were kind enough to send me and I've watched it several times. is this just a different way of viewing Genes tutorials? I've also watched a lot of his work that is on Youtube.
Thanks ;
Wayne

FTP is File Transfer Protocol. It has been around a lot longer than the World Wide Web. Most of you have probably experienced downloads stalling or timing out when downloading from a web browser. FTP is a sort of straight thru link to my server. I knew this was going to be a problem for some of you. FTP is real easy to do, it may be slightly complicated to set up. Windows XP has the capability built in. The problem there, it is not easy to explain because it varies with the version of Windows, and even with which Service Pack you have installed. Service Pack 3 made it a little harder to get into, but not real bad.
Old Gord communicated to me yesterday that he was very successful with FireFox. There are so many FTP programs out there, I personally think if you want a stand alone program, FileZilla is the best. And it is FREE.
If you want to give it a shot in FireFox or Internet Explorer, up at the top where your URL is located, i.e., Wood Carving Illustrated - How To Magazine for Carvers (for an example), you would wipe that out and enter ftp://72.16.132.210,
after it thinks about it for a minute a window will pop up asking for the user name and password. Enter that stuff and after a minute of so you should see the files. You can drag and drop what you see, to somewhere, like maybe the desktop. OR, one step further, on the right side of the browser at the top you will see a drop down beside the word "Page". If you drop that down you will see "Open FTP Site in Windows Explorer". Click that and it asks for the UserName and Password all over again. Then it opens in your Windows Explorer and it is real easy to drag and drop files into any folder you want. This is the most accurate instructions for Service Pack 3. If you have Service Pack 1 or 2, you may see the Address (URL) line at the top of the Windows Explorer window and can go from there.

If anyone needs specific help, ask away. If I can help you, I will.

As for the VLC Player, I have used it for a long time. Windows Media Player that comes with your Computer/Windows software is a nice player, and I am sure everyone has it. That is why I chose to do the DVD's in WMV format. The only problem is Windows Media Player will not play some videos because of missing CODEC's. CODEC's are plugins that are used for some video features, most of the time that is compression. To make sure you all could play the WMV's I did not use CODEC's. If I had, you would have to find that CODEC and install it. OK, now for VLC Player, it is a really neat video player that has almost every CODEC in the world built in. I have never found anything it would not play. It is very easy to install. Then you can play the native FLV (Flash) files from YouTube and I think you will find them to be of higher quality.

Definition (now it dawns on me): CODEC = Encoder/Decoder

This is one heck of a discussion for a wood carving message board, huh?

If you need help, PM me. I will get to it as I can. I have to work around here sometimes too(GRIN).

Bob

Sorry Soggy, missed one more answer. We are talking about downloading these files directly to your computer as Gene puts out new ones. Instead of waiting for the mail donkey to bring you a new disk from me.
I will still do the DVD's as needed, but we are getting rather huge here. The files in WMV format are filling a DVD now and we will be moving on to a second DVD. It is going to get time consuming. I think it is great if you al lare interested in trying out the FTP stuff.

Dear Gene, I really think you are doing the hard part. No person on the face of the planet has done as much as you to further woodcarving. Sure, there are the big guys that sell books and videos. They all want money. You have done this out of the goodness of your heart and it is a generous gesture. You have moved a lot of people beyond the absolute beginner stage and certainly brought more beginners into woodcarving than anyone in the world.
Sir, my hat is off to you!
Thank you so much,
BobT
