That's one area that I struggle with also! I have seen some good articles concerning folds in another magazine. I will be watching to see if anyone else has a good tutorial or suggestions.

Luciano .. the folds on clothes are a subject .. but the way a flat plane carver does folds is different ..

here is a few pieces from the master Trygg and look at the way he does clothing in the flat plane way ..

Mastering the folds in cloths is something that we have discussed here before, and found out there is limited resources available. There is one book sold here by Fox Chapel that you migh be interested in: "Dynamic Wrinkles and Drapery, by Burne Hogarth. Several other books have minor articles or chapters, but this book is the only one that is specifacly on clothing.

Good luck.

I carve in a chilly shop and wear a coat so i look at my own arms to see how the folds work on the coat
I kind of guess on the trousers

Mary-Ann Jack-Bleach has teamed up with Fred Zavadil to provide some information on this topic. Their first article will appear in the summer issue and addresses "rules of fabric" and shows how Fred gets the wrinkles and folds just right using a clay model. We're hoping to follow up with how he actually translates the clay model to wood in a future article.

It is a subject that a lot of carvers have trouble with and the Dynamic Wrinkles book - while not specifically for carvers, is one of the best resources I know of.

My wife has a wooden dummy like creature she uses for figure drawing. When I carve folds I get out some cloth and drape it over this dummy and use it as a model for the carving.

Luciano,
Looking again at your previous post with the pictures of the flat plain guys it appears that you are doing a pretty good job with the folds particularly on the fellow with the blue vest and red shirt

Uvawyo,
it is easy for me to copy from a model like I made for the boy with red shirt. In fact it is a pattern of Harley Refsal named Oskar.
It is instead difficult to create from nothing, probably I'll prove TreeWizard's tecnique using a little dummy
Moreover I will buy the Dynamic Wrinkles book I' m very curious to read it..

Thank you Gene for the fantastic Trygg's figures you posted ... it's awesom the way to make folds of this artist with few cuts!!! Really fantastic!! If you have other figures please makes us a big gift and post them.
ciao
luciano
