I went to a flea market last weekend and ran across these old Flat Plane carvings (by sheer luck!). I will have to make 2 posts on these so I can get all the shots in. The Sailor (pirate?) and the fisherman look like they have been carved by the same carver, due to the identical knife cuts, and are very old. I had to wash them and apply some wax on them before taking the shots. The Sailor is missing a sword or something, check out the hole in his right hand. The are no markings or dates for identification that I have seen, so little hope on who the carver was. If anyone can identify the carving style, or where to find out info, please post. I was just browsing the aisles at the flea market and looking for some "study guides" to work with, but never expected to find these! It sure must have been my day! I will post the other carving next. Rich |

Nice findings. Just the type of carvings I would like to find in flea market too. Gilles

| Today in an "Collectables" shop G'day Rich, I believe those natty nauticals are "knock offs" they are obviously mass produced as I also purchased a batch here in Australia. However, they seem well done and quite suitable to be used as guides to Flat Plane carving. That's the reason I bought mine. The empty handed feller could have been holding a cutlass, or maybe a harpoon or even a boathook, any of which would be easily lost or broken. Anyway, they are nice to have and very handy as a reference. I haven't tried to do this before, but I hope this link will take you to the post and snaps about my little find. Regards John

I purchased the "rain" sailer here, but there wasn't as much detail. Must be a mass produced pattern. Joggernot

Thanks everyone for your input. I'll use these for "go-bys". That was my intention of finding carvings at flea markets. In the process, I had learned that someone out there has mass produced them. I would like to see their set up some day. It still is not like taking a block of bass wood and a knife and ending up with a beautiful carving though! Thanks again, Rich |

Their "set up" is likely a small village with a number of people carving and painting these for the market. These are also common carving subjects and may have been carved individually since the one has a base and the other is a different size with no base. The poor swab looks sad with his empty fist. I bet a nice bottle of rum would make him happier. Last edited by Clifford_Parker; 04-23-2010 at 12:08 PM. |
