I've never carved flat plane before except a bear, but for people do you round of the corners of the head first or is there some other technique.

I read an interesting article the other day that advocated doing the head first and then if it didn't come out the way you invisioned you could trashed it and you didn't have all that time lost in the rest of the carving!

A flat plane face isnt just about roundness .. its about the way the cuts are placed to create the face .. a carver can carve a flat face and not be flat plane .. the cuts are the key .. click on the 3 faces below and see how the cuts accent the face Gene

Hi Farmall. I'd encourage you to try and get a hold of WCI Issue 15, Smmer 2001. There's an article by Joel Hull called "Making Faces" which goes over carving faces in the flat-plane style.
