Default faces

I've never carved flat plane before except a bear, but for people do you round of the corners of the head first or is there some other technique.

Different folk start in different places but yeah I work on the head early on to kind of get in in the purportion I want round the top or figure out the hat if he has one
Genes u tube tutorials or some on this sight under the tutorial thread will give you a good idea

I read an interesting article the other day that advocated doing the head first and then if it didn't come out the way you invisioned you could trashed it and you didn't have all that time lost in the rest of the carving!

A flat plane face isnt just about roundness .. its about the way the cuts are placed to create the face .. a carver can carve a flat face and not be flat plane .. the cuts are the key .. click on the 3 faces below and see how the cuts accent the face

Hi Farmall.
I'd encourage you to try and get a hold of WCI Issue 15, Smmer 2001. There's an article by Joel Hull called "Making Faces" which goes over carving faces in the flat-plane style.

Thanks guys, I just finished a flat plane gnome type thing and im workin on two other flat plane figures and i carved the head first and theyre looking pretty good so far
