Default Bottle stopper

Well, I have been wanting to learn more about flat plane style so I figure I better get started. I think I missed the look I was after, this fella to me looks more like caricature carving. I used reference from a Refsal book for the body but carved the head as I know how. Comments and suggestions are very much appreciated.

You may have missed the flatplane style a little, but you carved a nifty bottlestopper. I like him.

Extremely nice carving but definitely not the flat plane style...i've been trying at it myself but can't seem to get it either.

This is all really interesting. I was browsing through some past threads and ran across a post from Buffalo Bif from 12-2-2010 and I think his "imagination" of a FP carver was right on. It occurred to me that carvers are going to copy life as they see it. The subject of the early FP carvers seems to be peasants, farmers, or hunters doing daily activities. I suppose if you lived in Scandinavia in the 19 century you would have seen alot of peasants, farmers and hunters. I also realized, as Buffalo Bif noted about tool choice, the FP carver on his wagon ride in 1890 probably didn't have a set of Flexcut gouges, dental burs and a wood burning pen....so for me, its back to Genes videos ( thank you for those Gene ) and try to learn those knife cuts.
