Default Astronaut

In honor of the approaching (July 20/21th) 40th anniversary of the first lunar landing I thought I would try something different. Also the Stars and Stripes seemed fitting for the July 4th holiday this weekend. The carving is about 4.5" tall, carved from one block of wood (excluding the flag).

I like him! I'm pretty sure that this is the first carving of an astronaut that I've ever seen.

Very clever and very well done. If I could make one suggustion it would be to ditch the commercial flag and carve one to resemble the one that was really used...with the stiffening wire holding it out straight.

One small step for man, one giant leap for a great carving. Nicely done!

Thanks Lynn for comments and advice.

I went back and forth on the flag (looked at a bunch of pictures of the actually thing), but wasn’t sure my painting skill was up to the task. The one I used is actually not a commercial flag. I created the flag in a graphics program, printed it and decoupaged it to each side of a piece of wood I cut, then painted the edges to match. The pole is a section of bamboo skewer. All that being said I think you suggestion deserves more consideration on my part. Thanks again.

Ken

Ken...sometimes just the attempt to accomplish something you might think difficult is much more valuable than an easier shortcut. With the excellent job you did on the figure I have no doubt that the construction of the flag would prove to be much easier than you might think. Also, if I could make one more suggestion, a base resembling the texture and color of the moon would really complete the scene.

No matter which way you end up going you have a unique carving you should be very proud of.

Ken, what a novel idea. Was it really 40 years ago. How time flies...

Lynn, glad to see you up and around. Hope you're healing fine.
