Larry, I wouldn't try to use the knife for the beards quite yet on the smaller carvings. You might try to use a small u-gouge as a first pass on the beard. Avoid cutting these first beard lines in a straight line.Try to cut them in at least a curve, from top to bottom, or bottom to top. Follow up the u-gouge with the small 1/8" v-tool. Use the v-tool "between" the u-gouge cuts. This should give the beard some texture, and variation. All in all, this wizard is really a good one. As you carve more of them you can experiment with various different techniques. Tom H |

Neat simple looking Santa Larry. I beginning to like more and more the flat plane look when it's done well. Like the lined beard especially.

Larry: I think the secret to modeling hair with the knife is using a very sharp thin blade knife. The tip must be very sharp to get the nice "V" cuts your after. I know of one very well known Santa carver who uses a knife for hair and it's quite attractive. Practice man practice!

Larry.... Try using gouges.. and save the V tools for a few heavy cuts.. I normally do all my hair with a gouge and the V tool for the facial hair and at times for the eye brow,s... Have a nice day Will @ www.willhayden,com remember.. always use the LARGEST TOOL that you can and the same goes for painting... |

Larry, Love the wizard. That's the next thing I'll try. I had to leave town unexpectedly and although I've brought my carving box and my laptop I just haven't had the opportunity to watch Gene's wizard video. I have been carving those little bears, though. 8 of them so far . . .
