Due to an old injury my left leg gives out on me so I started to make a caved cane. After some thought I decided the caved cane would not be so good for every day use. I then made the cane with the derby handle. Both have a turned 1" dia. x1" tenon to fit into the handles and turned to fit the tips. Not shown the carved cane has a brass tip and both are red cedar.

G'day Eric, Lovely work mate. Both your canes look great and I love your choice of wood. I wish I could get my hands on some red cedar here in Oz. It really does make some impressive looking sticks. Quote:
1. You can carve into the shaft of your cane... just about whatever you want in the way of faces, but a spirit face is particularly straight forward. You can fit a derby handle (or any other sort of handle) to this type of cane. ![]() 2. Or you can provide for more wood at the front of your derby handle when you first cut it out and carve this. Its not particularly good for long spiritfaces but it works well for other types of carvings like dogs, bears wolves etc. |

Thank you all for your kind comments, Waitpinga Whittler thank you for your suggestions but I did not want to have a carving on the derby style handle. My wife and I have a horse ranch and what I need is a strong cane to help my footing around the ranch. |
