Default White-tail willow stick

Morning folks,

Here is my latest stick....still making some mistakes along the way but, getting easier. I love this willow and am truly enjoying finding new ways to highlight some old scrimshaw. This willow handle on spruce shaft is my standard for tourists this summer. But, I am having to make some of my own spacers...could use suggestions....lessons learned on setting these inserts also. I have been using these stump-cutters burs for cleaning out the diamonds....anybody have other preferences?

Is the joint between the willow and spruce able to be dismantled/unscrewed, or is the joint permanent? From the look of what you have done already, I'd say the use of power and burrs are the way to go. Seems to be working for you. The photos seem to be of a stick not finished with anything. Do you intend to oil or varnish it?

I am still in the experimental mode, I made this one for a brother. He can finish more...I buff them out and stop. I like these burs but, they seem to dull pretty fast...so, we'll see. The joint was supposed to come apart.............but, I got some resin into the joint...so, would have to cut it apart now....ha! That was one of my mistakes on this one. Still working on shipping...so, one piece sticks are problematic for me here. I really like the spruce shafts...alot easier to work with for me........at least now I am getting them straighter, so thanks for your comments and help with that. Haven't found good source for the spacers yet, but am able to make some up pretty easy with the casting resin.........

Thanks Tommy,

I will get these two piece sticks figured out. This one is going to a brother in South Texas...he has always like hunting deer and know that he will be happy to get it. The scrimshaw inserts are easy to set into the diamond willow....the spacers that I am using are from Jantz knife supply.

I like the the two piece stick with artwork. For spacers you can make your own with a 'hole' saw, of the size you want, and choose the materail most suited to the stick. Perhaps if you used threaded inserts and 'super' Loc-Tite you could ship and include simple assembly instructions? Just a couple of thoughts. HTH

Hello my Alaskan friend! Some people use Dental Burrs too! and if you want Horn spacers to go between a Handle and Shaft, Google 'The Stickman' A man called Keith Pickering, he supplies all sorts and there is a great Forum to register with too!
I so want to see how you do the Scrimshaw so wonderfully! Excellent job! Try finishing the Sticks with Danish Oil, I am going to use Ronseal Garden Furniture stuff and Danish Oil, and if the colour of the Stick isnt much cop, I shall stain it with Van Dyck Crystal solution.
take care mate
Simon
