I started a Mike Shipley Santa Claus. It's still in my box. Maybe I'll get it done by next Christmas. We'll be eating out quite a bit over the next month and I always like to leave a carricature of the waiter or waitress with the tip if we've had good service so I've been busy whittlin up bears and people in Cracker Barrel, Perkins, and Macaroni Grill uniforms!

Not a stick or cane, I'm working on a few little roses thanks to a thread on the general woodcarving forum here, smas for the kids. Roses aren't very Christmassy, but they're the only thing I'v done enough of to be fast at.

Been trying to clean up the list of unfinished commissions promised before Christmas. Just completed a pelican as a staff cap piece (leather wrapped handle below on the shaft). Decided he looked a bit bare, stuck up on the end of a stick like that so I carved the top of the staff to look like a marine wooden pilon complete with rope lashing and mooring ring. I highlighted the grain with a pyrography pen. Customer hasn't seen it yet but I hope he'll be pleased.

The bit of wood I cut the pelican from was large enough to make two so I tried another one as the knob handle on a cane. That seems to work well too.

Working on walking sticks. I try to do one a week. I've been carving for about 6 months. I keep a piece of wood in my pocket and carve every chance I get. In the evening I work on my sticks. I've had to start giving some as gifts and sold a few.

I just finished an Armadillo for my carving club Christmas party, now I have to get one more Santa done, a Penguin, a horse, three peas in a pod and come up with three more ornaments to carve. All that needs to be done by the 12th so I can get them mailed. I have already finished three Santa heads, an Elf head, a hanging Santa and a Squirrel holding a candy cane. I only started carving three months ago. The Squirrel took me two weeks, it was my first, then I have been able to get a couple a week done after work since then. So 7 more in the next 12 days will be a chore. But looking forward to it.

Steve

I hope you're retired Steve, cause if you gotta work too I don't think you're going to have time to eat or sleep....
