Default Toy story stick finished

well finally i got the stick finished before Xmas. incase you missed the earlier post..

Toy story walking stick

here it is painted and ready to wrap. as you can see i decided not to carve the little lads name on the handle, thought a rope would look better for the cowboy theme. Also decided against carving "Woody's" hat as i thought it might be too fragile for a 4 year old, i made the neck a lot thicker too. I'm quite happy with "Bullseye" but not so with "Woody".Anyway it's all finished hope you like it . as usual any C&C welcome.

Hi Kev,
Looks good mate! Understand your concern with Woody... its hard to carve an 'in the round' face on the shaft of a stick because the stick keeps on going above the character which leaves him/her looking as though there's something growing out the top of their head. The only solution I've ever found for that is to carve the face on just the front of the stick, parting the hair on ther side and bringing it down. (This is the standard approach with most spirit faces carved into the shaft.) Thus to the eye the carving is finished and whatever else is carved above the face is disconnected and separate. Something to think about for next time I guess, but don't worry about it here... it looks great anyway. He's gonna love it! Don't think Bullseye could have gotten any better... fantastic.

Just wondering what length you made the stick. If for a 4year old, what happens to it when he outgrows it? Any options for making it taller has he grows?

I think it's a wonderful stick for the young man, well carved, I could not even imagine attempting to duplicate woody in wood so I think you did well. I'm sure he'll be tickled!

Thanks for the kind words all WW the stick is a little too long for him as yet the plan is to put and leather bound grip on the shaft, thanks to yourself for the expert help and advice, and he'll use it as a staff at first and maybe in a year or two he'll then use it as a walking stick...that's the idea anyway.
thanks also for the tip re: parting the hair

Great looking cane! My grandson (3 yrs old) takes my cane from me when we are walking. He uses it as a staff. I made him a little cane like mine, and he threw it, and said "No granpa's cane!". So I got a little short cane hanging on the wall.
