Default Tools Of Trade

Can anyone tell me what the best type of mallets are for carving? I've just started and I have a set of carving gouges but didn't get a chance to buy much else. Currently I'm using a rubber mallet I've had laying around in the basement, probably a 18oz? But the grip on it sucks and I didn't want to buy something that I'm not going to be happy with. So if you can help me out I'd appreciate it.
Also if anyone is from Wisconsin can you tell me the best place to but supplies from?

Probably not the answer you are looking for I never use mallets but asked once if anyone had carved bowling ball pins and had a few replies that they make excellent mallets once the outer plastic was removed
