Default thanks for the recommendation!..and tks for adding

Just so happens I have been doing a little reading on canes & walking sticks and this forum addition couldn't have come at a better time for me...as a beginner, I happened across a cane project in no less a turning magazine, turning 2x2x37 stock on a lathe and adding a top to it....can some recommend where & type of wood, they said maybe ash/maple/walnut, but looking for something easy for a few....going to try a run to my local mill & see what they have in that size of a billet....mail order is nice, but shipping cost are murder!....tks and once again great addition to the forum!...Dennis

Hi Dennis,

I'm a stick carver, but not a wood turner. Afriend of mine goes to Rockler and gets 2x2 that they sell for table legs. It's in whatever hardwood that's available from their supplier and sometimes un-named, but cheap at around $5 each. As far as choice of wood, it's up to you, unless you choose Balsa, not recommended. Lol. Otherwise, just choose what you like from what's available.

Ask the mill about the wood you're acquiring from them. They will know the properties.

Good luck
